August 15, 2008 - Olympics Interpreter Marathon

The Olympics is a marathon event for language translators, it has been claimed.

Interpreter Bill Weber, who has taken part in 13 consecutive summer and winter Olympic Games, told Reuters the competition are the longest continuing interpreting event in the world, topping any United Nations or European Union session.

He is currently heading a team of 112 interpreters from 18 countries at the event, and expects to be working constantly for five weeks, according to the news provider.

"It's a mistake to think that the Games are easy because it is sports," he added.

"None of us are experts on sports rules so we must prepare ourselves. The Chinese interpreters have to be very careful because they must absolutely, accurately interpret everything exactly as it is said."

May 9 - 12, 2008 - Berlin Culture Carnival

Carnival of the Cultures is a four-day street carnival that celebrates Berlin‘s cultural diversity. Bringing together a mix of both professional and amateur artists, the festival explores new trends and styles in youth and minority culture.

First held in 1996, it has now grown into a huge event celebrating the city’s 440,000 immigrant citizens that represent nearly 200 countries around the world. The highlight of the weekend is the incredible Whitsuntide street parade which sees performers, jugglers, stiltwalkers and dancers accompanying floats carrying DJs and musicians through the city’s streets in the Kreuzberg District - the city’s most international area.

Each year there is also a children’s festival that takes place in Goerlitzer Park with a spectacular range of events aimed specifically at children and their families.

In 2005 nearly 2 million people attended the weekend festival.

APRIL 2008

April 25, 2008 - ANZAC DAY

ANZAC Day – 25 April – is probably Australia's most important national occasion. It marks the anniversary of the first major military action fought by Australian and New Zealand forces during the First World War.

ANZAC stands for Australian and New Zealand Army Corps. The soldiers in those forces quickly became known as ANZACs, and the pride they soon took in that name endures to this day.

February 7, 2008 - Chinese New Year

Year of the Rat. Chinese New Year's Eve is known as Chúxi Chu literally means "pass" and xi means "Eve".

Celebrated in areas with large populations of ethnic Chinese, Chinese New Year is considered a major holiday for the Chinese and has had a strong influence on the new year celebrations of its geographic neighbours, as well as cultures with whom the Chinese have had extensive interaction. These include Koreans, Mongolians, Nepalese, Bhutanese, Vietnamese, and formerly the Japanese before 1873.

In Singapore, Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Thailand, and other countries with significant Chinese populations, Chinese New Year is also celebrated, largely by overseas Chinese, but it is not part of the traditional culture of these countries.

In Canada, although Chinese New Year is not an official holiday, many ethnic Chinese hold large celebrations and Australia Post issues New Year's themed stamps every year.
