+ Hindi is a term used to classify several languages and dialects and as such the following must be considered:
Standard Hindi and Standard Urdu have different formal registers/vocabularies. Although intelligible with each other, Hindi’s is derived from Sanskrit (de-Persianized and de-Arabicized) where as Urdu’s is derived from Arabic or Persian. Each are written with different writing systems, Devanagari and Perso-Arabic script, respectively
+ Hindustani, a blend of Hindi and Urdu is spoken widely in northern India. It is not an official language and has a lexical mixture in varying proportions of the two
+ Literary Hindi, or Hindi-Urdu, has 4 varieties: Hindi (High, Nagari, Literary, and Standard); Urdu, Dakhini, Rekhta
+ Fiji Hindi – spoken in Fiji by most Fijian citizens of Indian descent. A distinct dialect based on Hindi as spoken in India but with its own special grammar and vocabulary suited for Fiji
